Questions fréquentes
How is credit card interest calculated in Canada?
Issuers charge interest daily on your balance at the card’s annual rate ÷ 365, and add it monthly. This calculator uses the close monthly equivalent: balance × APR ÷ 12. Paying your full statement balance by the due date avoids interest on purchases entirely.
How long does it take to pay off $5,000 at 20.99%?
Paying $250 a month, about 2 yrs 1 mo and $1,207 in interest. Paying only a 3% minimum stretches it to 22 yrs 2 mo and $6,697 in interest.
What is the minimum payment on a Canadian credit card?
It varies by issuer, typically a small percentage of the balance (often 2–3%) or a flat $10, plus interest and fees. Because it shrinks as the balance falls, paying only the minimum can take many years.
Should I switch to a low-interest card?
If you carry a balance month to month, a low-rate card (around 12–14%) usually saves far more than any rewards card earns. Rewards cards make sense when you pay in full every month.
Does paying more than the minimum help?
Yes. Every extra dollar goes straight to principal, which cuts future interest. Even $50 more a month can save months and hundreds of dollars.
