Questions fréquentes
How does a balance transfer work?
You move debt from a high-interest card to a new card offering a low promotional rate (often 0%–3.99%) for 6–12 months. Most charge a one-time transfer fee, commonly 1%–3% of the amount moved, added to the new balance.
Is a balance transfer worth it?
It’s worth it when the interest you avoid is larger than the transfer fee, and you can pay down most of the balance before the promo ends. This calculator shows both numbers side by side.
What happens when the promotional rate ends?
Any remaining balance starts charging the card’s regular rate, which can be 12.99% on low-rate cards or 20%+ on others. Aim to clear the balance before then; the calculator shows the monthly payment that would.
Do new purchases on the transfer card get the promo rate?
Usually not. Purchases typically get the regular purchase rate, and payments may apply to the low-rate balance first. Avoid using the transfer card for spending.
