What Happens If You Overcontribute to Your RRSP in Canada?
You can go up to $2,000 over your RRSP deduction limit without penalty. Above that, the CRA charges 1% a month on the excess until you withdraw it or new room absorbs it.

How much can I overcontribute to my RRSP?
Up to $2,000 over your deduction limit without penalty, if you were 18 or older during the previous year. The amount above that is an excess contribution. The 2026 RRSP dollar limit is $33,810, or 18% of your previous year’s earned income if that is lower.
The $2,000 buffer is not deductible, but it can stay in your RRSP and grow tax-deferred. You can deduct it in a later year when you have new room.

How do I fix an RRSP overcontribution?
Withdraw the excess as soon as you notice it. The CRA says you may not owe the 1% tax for a month if you withdraw the excess before the end of the month in which it was made.
The withdrawal is normally taxable, with tax withheld by your institution, but you may be able to get it back by filing Form T3012A or T746. Ask your institution how to process it.
Do I need to file anything?
Yes. If you owe the tax, file Form T1-OVP and pay within 90 days after the end of the year in which you had the excess. Late filing adds a penalty.
Keep records showing exactly when you made the withdrawals, because RRSP receipts and T4RSP slips do not show the month.
How do I avoid overcontributing?
Check your deduction limit on your latest notice of assessment or in CRA My Account before contributing, and add up contributions at every institution, including group RRSP payroll contributions and pension adjustments.
