Questions people ask
What is the GST rate in Canada?
The federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) is 5%. In Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island it is combined with the provincial portion into a single Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).
Which provinces charge HST?
Ontario charges 13% HST. Nova Scotia charges 14% (down from 15% on April 1, 2025). New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island charge 15%.
How much is sales tax in Quebec?
Quebec adds 5% GST and 9.975% QST, for 14.975% in total. Both are calculated on the price before tax.
How do I calculate GST backwards from a total?
Divide the tax-included price by 1 plus the total tax rate. In Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST is $13. Choose Remove tax from a price in the calculator to do this automatically.
Which provinces have no provincial sales tax?
Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge only the 5% GST.
