How Do Cash Advance Apps Work in Canada?
How cash advance apps work, what they really cost, how they compare with payday loans, and who can use them.

What is a cash advance app?
An app that lends a small amount, usually a few hundred dollars, against your next pay and takes it back from your bank account.
The best-known Canadian apps charge no interest. They earn money from optional fees for instant transfers, monthly memberships or tips.

Bree offers up to $750 with no mandatory fees, KOHO Cover up to $500 with KOHO’s Cover bundle (from $2 a month), and Nyble a $30 to $250 credit-building line. None charges interest.

| Nyble | $30 – $250 | 0% | None | Monthly payments |
We list an app only after checking its fees and amounts on its own website. Nyble’s line is built for credit building: its payments are reported to Equifax Canada.
How do they compare with payday loans?
They are far cheaper. A payday loan can cost $14 per $100 for two weeks, about 365% a year.
On a $300 advance repaid in two weeks, a payday loan at the regulated maximum costs $42. A cash advance app with no interest costs nothing unless you pay for instant delivery or a membership.
Who can use them?
Usually adults with a Canadian bank account and regular income deposits. Most don’t check your credit.
Availability varies by province. Bree, for example, isn’t accepting new customers in Quebec, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.
What should I watch for?
Optional fees, automatic repayments that can overdraw your account, and the habit of borrowing every pay cycle.
A $3 instant fee on a $100 advance for two weeks is the same as a very high annual rate. Use standard delivery when you can.
