Values assume the transfer goes into a registered account (TFSA, RRSP or FHSA). Most percentage offers pay less on non-registered accounts and are paid in instalments over one to two years.

How long do I have to keep the money there?

Most transfer bonuses require you to keep the assets for 12 to 24 months. TD and RBC require holding until November 30, 2028; Questrade checks your balance in June and December 2027; Qtrade until February 5, 2028; Wealthsimple pays its match monthly over 24 months.

Withdrawing early usually cancels the remaining payments, so only transfer money you plan to leave invested.

Who pays the transfer-out fee?

Your old broker typically charges about $150 to move an account. Many new brokers refund it: Questrade up to $150 per account, RBC up to $200 on $15,000+, TD up to $150 per transfer on $25,000+, and Wealthsimple on $25,000+.

Are brokerage bonuses taxable?

Cash bonuses paid into a non-registered account are generally treated as taxable income or as a reduction in the cost of your investments, depending on the offer. Check with a tax professional for your situation.
